The Stringybark Express - Lil Red Postal Motor operates on the old broad gauge railway line from Wahgunyah, (on the Victorian side of the Murray River, opposite Corowa ), along the flat open Carlyle plains, through the remnant woodlands, then past vineyards and orchards, under the historic High Street Bridge and into the Rutherglen Station. If required, Lil Red can then continue south past Rutherglen to Lilliput Station, and Black Dog Creek picnic reserve.
Trips on Lil Red are available DAILY It is advisable to obtain BOOKINGS Contact the Local Tourist Information Centres ( Rutherglen, Corowa, Albury- Wodonga ( Gateway ), Wangaratta, Beechworth ) or Phone 0260 333 937 ( 9.00 am till 9.00 pm ) or mobile 0417 058 137 during train times The 19th Century Railway ( 1897 ) is operated by the Green TRail Associates Group Inc., as a Community and Tourist Railway initiative. The group also has interests in Biodiversity and Natural Conservation practice. The Lil Red Postal Motor carries up to ten persons. For larger groups, a number of options can be placed, including the specially built tourist "tram". Family Tickets are available from as little as $25. Trips may also be booked and run at any time you select from 8.00 am until 9.00 pm ( weather permitting ). A small surcharge may apply. Refreshments are available upon request and Catering can be arranged with Motels and local Food Outlets. " BYO" facilities may be arranged when booking.
In the photos above you can see the train being loaded with passengers at the Wahgunyah station yards, and above left is the view along the tracks as the train pulls out of Wahgunyah. The photo on the right shows the train passing through the Rutherglen forest.

The photo above is of the train nearing the Rutherglen Station, and although the photo does not show them clearly, you have a great view of Rutherglen's Wine Bottle Town Water Supply ( 1 ) vineyards ( 2 ) and the Catholic Church ( 3 ).
Above Lil Red is stopped at the Rutherglen Station, where the passengers have disembarked and gone for a picnic in the park located in front of the station. There are tables, seats, shady trees, electric barbeques and excellent toilet facilities here. The main street of Rutherglen is only 100 metres away, where there is a variety of interesting shops, from take away or eat in restaurants, clothing and hardware, to antiques and art and craft shops.
Lil Red is ideal for family picnics, or simply a family train trip, and can also be booked for special occasions, such as birthday parties, conferences, seminars and celebrations. Catering can be arranged and combined outings such as meeting up with the Stagecoach, or a bus, to visit specific venues, can also be arranged. Lil Red can be hired for early morning breakfast jaunts, pre dinner wanders, twilight twitter trips, and even night owl prowls. The Rates and Fares vary according to distance traveled, number of people, and length of stopover times, but return fares begin from as little as $25 per group.
