- ABC News story: Colston set to sink Telstra Bill
- 10th July 1998
- With a lot of puffing and grandstanding it's all happening ... or is it? What's the idea of the of the "sweetener" - untimed local calls?? For who?? And when?? More particularly ... how??? And what happens once Telstra's sold and there's no leverage to keep in place what appear to be little more than grandiose ideas and plans for further investigation?? You'll need more than a touch of Sherlock Holmes to find anything more than political games in this one. But have a look and a say for yourself, but don't blink, or it'll all be over ...

"...error message is incorrect" says Microsoft
8th July 1998
The "Boys from Redmond" (Microsoft) are at it again. If they're not deliberately trying to get away with mass deception, (i.e they are really being "mis-reported", "misinterpreted" and it's all just a "mistake") then it seems they only open their mouths these days to change feet.
Included in their latest saving grace for the US economy (Win98) is a very embarrasing error message experienced by anyone using the FrontPage Wizard to publish their home page on the web. It suggests the user "might like to try selecting <Other Internet Provider>" (such as Microsoft's own MSN) "from the list" if the users ISP is not running Microsoft's software on their servers.
Read the error message (use your BACK button to return)
Read a humerous ISP's alternative (not ours ... but not bad. Use your BACK button)
As it turns out, the messages do not actually mean customers should choose another Internet service provider, such as Microsoft's own MSN service. Instead, they mean customers should use a different way to load their Web pages, according to Microsoft and Costa.
"Microsoft will absolutely issue an update to the (software) to fix the error message in question," Priscilla Mistele, Microsoft's product manager for Front Page, said in an e-mail to Reuters received Tuesday.

If you have a 56K modem, you WON'T get anything faster than 33K6 unless you are calling our digital modem pool. If you can call Albury for a LOCAL CALL then you should change to the digital number, but you may also need to
update your Trumpet dial script. You can download a replacement Trumpet script from ftp://ftp.albury.net.au/pub/hidden/login.cmd Download this script into a temporary folder or directory, re-name or back-up your old working script in your Trumpet directory for safe-keeping, then copy the new script into your Trumpet directory.
If you are still using SLIP (all new accounts for at least the last two years have been PPP accounts), we would appreciate you changing to PPP. For information on changing, please e-mail ppp@albury.net.au
