Christmas '98 Issue

In the November issue we continue our count down to 2000 with an update of the most commonly used operating system's compliency statements as issued by their respective manufacturers. The MSFiles has a summary of the Anti-Trust case to date and handy links to further coverage including witness depositions. In the new AltOS section we cover the formation of a local Linux users group, and a call to arms for OS2 supporters.

On the national front we explain the current underlying dissatisfaction within the ISP community over the issue of the TIO and it's contrived machinations.

This issue also sees the first article in our new series of basic computer procedures - what is a back-up and how do you do one, particularly before the turn of the Millennia and before ANY Millennia software/hardware test!!!!! We also revive the HTML authors corner featuring an article developed by Nick on using the forms cgi processor available for use by all ALI subscribers. There's also a few curly questions from readers in the You Wrote section. As this is our last issue for this year (next scheduled issue will be January!!!) we'll conclude with a few Christmas and New Year links for the kids, big and small.

Read on the 'net ...

From the Sept. 7 issue of PC Week, in Spencer Katt's "Rumor Central" column in the back. The last paragraph reads as follows:

"A visitor to Novell's campus last week stumbled across what he's calling the Ultimate Reboot. As the company makes the transition to an all-IP network using NetWare 5.0, users at one of the buildings ran into problems. Log-ins gradually became slower and slower, to the point where no one in the facility could get into the corporate network. IT's solution: powering down the entire building, including lights, air conditioning, the whole ball of wax. After restoring the current, users had no further problems."

In other words, they had to reboot *the building*. Ai yi yi.
Now I've seen everything.

Phone Number changes
It's final - Telstra have completed the regional phone number changeover. ALL REGIONAL NUMBERS NEED the 60 or 57 prefix or they WILL NOT WORK. You should have changed your ALI dial in number by now to include the correct prefix for your area (otherwise your ALI dialler won't work - instructions are here).

Modems
If you have a 56K modem, you WON'T get anything faster than 33K6 unless you are calling our digital modem pool. If you can call Albury for a LOCAL CALL then you should change to the digital number, but you may also need to update your Trumpet dial script. You can download a replacement Trumpet script from ftp://ftp.albury.net.au/pub/hidden/login.cmd Download this script into a temporary folder or directory, re-name or back-up your old working script in your Trumpet directory for safe-keeping, then copy the new script into your Trumpet directory.

If you are still using SLIP (all new accounts for at least the last two years have been PPP accounts), we would appreciate you changing to PPP. For information on changing, please e-mail ppp@albury.net.au
