JACK RILEY WAS MANAGER OF THE TOM GROGGIN CATTLE STATION IN 1884. HIS REPUTATION AS A SKILLED HORSEMAN IS LEGENDARY. IN THE MID 1880'S HE PERSUED A THOROUGHBRED STALLION ON HOSEBACK THROUGH A ROUGH MOUNTAIN TERRAIN AND SUCCESSFULLY STEERED THE HORSE HOME. BANJO PATTERSON VISITED JACK AND SOON THE BALLARD OF "THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER" WAS PUBLISHED, AND OF COURSE IS NOW A PART OF AUSTRALIAN HISTORY.
