Bright Rail Trail From Bright to Porepunkah
Come and cycle the Mountains to the Murray Rail Trail, from the Snowgums to the Rivergums ( when completed ). The Bright Rail Trail currently consists of approximately 94 Km of bitumen sealed path that is built over the disused railway line from Bright to Wangaratta. The Trail from Wangaratta to Wahgunyah ( on the Murray near Corowa ) has not been completed yet. A Branch line from Everton to Beechworth is also open, a distance of approximately16Km.
The Bright Rail Trail follows a gentle gradient that makes it suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. There are three toilet blocks built on the bicycle path, one at Eurobin, one at Everton Station, and the other at Tarrawingee Station. There are however public toilets in all the towns mentioned along the Trail.
The distances between the towns are as follows
* Note Everton is approximately 3 km South of Everton Station. The Bright to Porepunkah Section of the Rail Trail Distance 7 kms.
The commencement of the Rail Trail is at the Beautiful Old Bright Railway Station, now a Museum, located in Station Street at the south western side of the town. The Rail Trail start is shown in the photo above left, and trails off between the old goods shed and the stationary trains at the back of the museum. The path wanders between residential homes and guest houses, until it crosses the main street, photo above right, and passes the Information Rotunda at the north end of the town.
Once past the Information Rotunda, the path heads along this beautiful section photographed above, and crosses the Ovens River.
The quaint old Railway Bridge across the Ovens has had a small observation shelter built half way across, to allow tourists to peacefully view the river valley under the shade from the elements. It is a great place for a rest from pedalling, and an excellent point to walk to. Pushing onwards, the trail joins the Back Porepunkah Road, and meanders towards Porepunkah, passing the Golf Course, photo above left, and then entering Porepunkah officially finishing past the main shopping street in the magnificent Porepunkah Recreation Reserve on the banks of the Ovens River, photo above right. As this section of the Bike/ Rail Trail is by far the shortest section, is is also the most popular. Everybody from day tourists to locals, from 7 to 77 years old, can be found anywhere along this section. It is particularly popular as a walking track to the bridge and back, and dog walkers to serious joggers may be found usually in the early morning and evenings. For the apprehensive bicycle rider, this section of the Rail Trail is also the flattest, making it extremely easy for all ages, and for all levels of fitness.
