Eildon Tourist Information Centre Open 7 days from 10.00 am till 2.00 pm Run purely by Volunteers Besides all the brochures and Information on the happenings around Eildon, there are three items well worth seeing at the Information Centre. The first is a huge carpet which has a photograph of the building of the Weir incorporated into it. You can't miss it. It hangs proudly on the wall. The second is a group of 6 photographs of the original dam wall being built in 1912. This was known as the Sugarloaf Dam. ( Mt Sugarloaf is virtually one end of the weir wall ). It is well worth while dropping in just to see these 6 photos. The third item is a group of photographs and a story of the Glen Hope Homestead, which has emerged from the Weir twice in the last 10 years due to the drought conditions.
Glen Hope Homestead The Homestead which has emerged from the waters of Lake Eildon as a result of the recent droughts was originally built by John Merlow. John came from Italy in 1861 and went to Ballarat in search of Gold. In 1867 John and his English wife Mary moved to Durham Gully near Alexandra. Around 1880 the Merlow family moved to the Lake Eildon National Park area. John sank several mine shafts and was successful in locating a Gold Reef.. The family selected land beside the road from Alexandra to Mansfield. The 320 acre farm was named Glen Hope. In 1900 a second house, the largest building still standing on the former property was built, a covered way connected the kitchen and the old house. John Merlow died in 1912. At the Information Centre there are 5 excellent photographs showing the Merlow family and property before Lake Eildon flooded the valley, and some photos of the property that has risen out of the water in the droughts of the 1990's and 2002. Depending on the level of the weir, you may be able to see the buildings. Ask for directions at the Eildon or Alexandra Information Centres.
