THE JINDERA PIONEER MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY WAS FORMED IN 1967, 100 YEARS AFTER THE FIRST GERMAN SETTLORS ARRIVED IN JINDERA, AND THE WAGNER'S STORE, THE RESIDENCE AND THE GROUNDS WERE WERE PURCHASED AND RESTORED TO ITS OLD WORLD CHARM BY A COMMITTEE OF VOLUNTARY WORKERS. THE ORIGINAL STORE, ( NOW THE TEA ROOMS ), AND THE ORIGINAL RESIDENCE, ( NOW THE THREE ROOMS BEHIND THE TEA ROOMS ) WERE BUILT IN 1874 BY MR JOHANN ROSLER AND PETER WAGNER. WHEN THE ORIGINAL GERMAN SETTLERS ARRIVED AT JINDERA FROM ADELAIDE BY WAGONS IN 1867 THEY FOUND THE WATTLE AND DAUB COTTAGE EXACTLY WHERE IT IS NOW, ( IN THE GROUNDS OF THE JINDERA MUSEUM ), WHICH MEANS THAT THIS COTTAGE COULD DATE BACK TO THE 1840'S, WHICH CERTAINLY MAKES IT THE OLDEST REMAINING ORIGINAL COTTAGE OR HOUSE IN THE ENTIRE ALBURY DISTRICT. IN PRESENTING THIS MUSEUM AND ITS COLLECTION TO YOU, THE COMMITTEE HAVE GATHERED TOGETHER ARTICLES, FURNITURE ETC., USED IN THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF THE PEOPLE OF THE PIONEERING PERIOD OF THE 19th CENTURY IN THIS DISTRICT, ROUGHLY FROM THE 1830'S TO THE END OF THE CENTURY. ALL THE ITEMS HAVE COME FROM THE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS OR HAVE HAD SOME KIND OF ASSOCIATION WITH ITS PIONEERS. SO AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE GENERAL STORE, AND THEN THROUGH THE RESIDENCE, AND INSPECT THE PIONEER SLAB HUT AND THE ORIGINAL WATTLE AND DAUB COTTAGE, ALL FULLY FURNISHED, THE COMMITTEE HOPES THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE LIFE AS IT WAS LIVED IN THOSE EARLY DAYS, AND THAT YOU GAIN A PICTURE OF THOSE DIFFICULT, BRAVE, SOMETIMES HAPPY, BUT OFTEN HEARTBREAKING TIMES. WE HOPE THAT IT WILL BRING BACK MEMORIES AND AN APPRECIATION OF ALL THOSE FINE PEOPLE WHO GAVE US THE BEGINNING OF THIS MAGNIFICENT COUNTRY WE LIVE IN.
THE MUSEUM IS OPEN TUESDAY TO SUNDAY OCTOBER TO APRIL, 10.00AM UNTIL 4.30 PM MAY TO SEPTEMBER, 10.00 AM UNTIL 3.00PM PHONE 0260 263 622 PRESS HERE TO SEE The Original Cottage and the Slab Hut Edison Record Cabinet built 1880's Spanish Mahogany Sideboard, related to First Fleet Plaques hand painted on tin, 1880's
