MOTH The region is famous for its Bogong Moth. The caterpillars hatch on the Darling Downs in Queensland, eat and grow, bury into the soil, and emerge in late spring as moths. They eat ravenously and then at the correct climatic conditions, all leave on mass, billions of them, flying at 1,000 metres on the strong southerly thermals. They cover hundreds of kilometres per night, and arrive on mass at Mt Bogong and surrounding area within days of leaving Queensland, some 2,500 kilometres away. The moths crawl into crevasses and caves and simply hang on the granite walls, about 17,000 moths per square metre, looking like roofing tiles. They do not eat. They hang here for nearly 5 months and then, as the weather gets cooler, they fly individually back to the same paddock, but only at tree level, taking many weeks to arrive, mate, lay 2000 eggs each female, and die. Due to the immense numbers of the moths, over thousands of years all the aboriginal tribes from as far away as South Australia would arrive at late spring and feed on these moths for many months.
