The quaint former Yackandandah Court House makes a solid statement as it sits firmly at the bottom of Police Paddocks next to a rusting galvanised iron railway shed. It forms a picturesque setting for a lovely view over Yackandandah.
From the side the Court house looks far more imposing, with its columned verandah entrance, its high windows in the court room, and its service rooms attached across the back. The small door on the side leads into the "Dock," the area where the prisoner or defendant occupied. The court house was warmed by a large fire place, as you can see from the chimney on the side.
From the front the Court House is very similar to many of the local court houses in design, although not in size. The design is similar to the Beechworth and Chiltern Court Houses. The Court House was built in 1864 and last formerly used in 1971.
Once inside ( the keys are with the local Yackandandah Shire ), you immediately notice the snugness of the court room. The Magistrate would have had plenty of room up on his bench. Then there is a Dock on the left next to the fire place for the defendant. The clerk of courts has his own "compartment" in front of the magistrate, and then there is the "pulpit" like witness box. The solicitors, if any, or the prosecutor, would share the table, and then there are only bench seats for about 10 persons. There would not be a need for a microphone.
Allans Flat Lake
The local swimming and water recreation area is at Allans Flat, where this large lake is the remnance of gold dredging. There are picnic facilities on both sides of the lake. The lake is large enough to have a pleasant day trying out your canoe on the calm waters.
Sir Isaac Isaac Park is located to the north of the town on the main Wodonga Road.
