Australian Aboriginal Paintings
In the pages below you will find a selection of Australian Aboriginal Paintings by renowned Australian Aboriginal Artist Eddy Harris.
This painting depicts different events that happen in the Dreamtime, for example, at the centre of the painting it shows a wooden carrying dish which was used by the women of the tribe to collect food. This dish is full of a collection of various coloured ochre rocks, used for painting. Eddy Harris
Above a close up of the painting shows the intricate detail of the traditional aboriginal art, with thousands of dots making up the picture. In aboriginal paintings, circles are the traditional symbol of waterholes or lakes. In this painting the wooden food collection dish is drawn between two waterholes, as this is the area that more suitable coloured ochre rocks, being natural clay or earths used as yellow, brown or red pigments, are found. Near the two waterholes are emu tracks, the white arrow shaped painting, which are left by the emus as they leave their nests to go for a drink. The emu nests are shown as the four smaller circles, and within each nest could be as many as 15 eggs. These eggs were a valuable food source for our people. The blue, red and yellow represents the different arid vegetation found in this region, whilst the reddy brown background represents the colour of the outback soil. The white represents the granite outcrops scorched by sunlight.
