VANE Wind Vanes, brass and copper at Beechworth Gallery
VASE Antique Vases, Walkers of Beechworth VAULT In the 1850's Beechworth was the centre of the north east Gold fields, and controlled most of the Gold which was found. To do this the buildings there had extremely large vaults. The Bank Restaurants have two large vaults which are now used as wine cellars. The building opposite the post office which is now Beechworth Gold has a vault. One that is probably far easier to see is in the Chiltern Lollies of Old shop, which used to be a bank. Please drop in there and see the vault full of lollies.
VEAL Local Veal readily obtainable at most Butchers and Restaurants.
VEHICLE Antique vehicles may be seen at
VEIN Veins of Gold were found all throughout the area.
VENISON Available from the Eurobin Deer Farm, Myrtleford and Kennedy's Meats, Wodonga.
VENOMOUS SNAKES There are three main Venemous snakes in the area. The large Brown Snake and the smaller Striped Tiger Snake are both fairly common and become quite aggressive. If seen it is best to avoid them at all costs. If bitten, dont panic but proceed directly to a doctor. The medium to small Red Bellied Black Snake is a very docile snake, which will attempt to get away from you at all times. This Red Bellied Snake is very beautiful to look at, with its black as black body and shiny red underneath. This snake kills and eats the other two snakes. However its venom is just as poisonous. Snakes like long grass and damp to wet conditions, so be careful if you are in these areas, such as river banks and swamps. Snakes are most active in spring and summer. If you are in the bush, always keep an eye out for them. Remember, they will generally want to avoid you, so let them.
VERDICTS Some extremely strange verdicts were given through the Beechworth Court. Visit the court to see some of them.
VERSE The poets of the area gather at both the Corryong Man from Snowy Mountains Festival and the Yarrawonga Poetry Festival.
VERSION There appears to be quite a few versions of the life and times of Ned Kelly. Try asking at the Beechworth Court House, the El Dorado Museum , the Glenrowan Kelly Museums and the Benalla Info Centre. See if any versions are the same.
VERTEX Victoria's vertex is Mt Bogong. The highest point. Mt Bogong at Mt Beauty is the highest mountain in Victoria.
VESSEL Our best known vessel is the Paddle Steamer Cumberoona which is hidden from the tourists in Albury somewhere.
VIADUCT The closest thing to a viaduct is the bridge over the lake or Border between Yarrawonga in Victoria and Mulwala in NSW. However a viaduct was used to transport water, and from Lake Mulwala there are thousands of kilometres of irrigation channels being fed by the Lake. You cross over the main irrigation channel as you enter Mulwala from Albury.
VICTIMS and VILLIANS A whole listing of these is available at the Beechworth Court House. Drop in and see if you are one.
VICTORIAN BORDER There does not appear to be much fan fare when people cross the NSW / Victorian Border. There should really be a brass band playing on each side. Luckily at this stage you do not need a Visa to cross. Not that long ago however, a few decades, you needed a health certificate. The Border consists of a fairly narrow stretch of water called the Murray River, ( which somehow escaped being called the Hume River). Odly enough the water only seems to separate these strange persons called polititians, especially local polititians, who do not appear to be able to think across it. Try a test. Walk across the Border and see if you can still think. If you can you will never make a good Local or State politition. The Border or River is crossed 9 times in this area. The crossings are near Khancoban, near Walwa, at the Wyma Punt, on the Bethanga Bridge over the Hume Weir, the small bridge below the Hume Fish Farm, in between Albury and Wodonga, from Howlong to Rutherglen, from Wahgunyah to Corowa, and from Yarrawonga to Mulwala in this region.
VICTORIA'S HIGHEST WATERFALL Steavenson's Falls at Marysville.
VICTORIA'S TALLEST TREE The mountain ash stands 84 metres high in the Cumberland Walk near Marysville.

VIXEN A Vixen is a Lady Fox, or a female fox. As a fox is extremely cunning and crafty, imagine just how much more so is the female of the species. Therefore it is unlikely that you will see one. However, the Australian Jewellery Factory sold a range of jewellery called Vixen Jewellery, because it was hand crafted and cunningly designed for foxy ladies, so if you had called in there on the Causeway at Wodonga, you would have seen the range, including their cute Vixen Brooch logo. Unfortunately, it is now gone.
VOLLY BALL Albury Wodonga Volleyball Association, 0260 431 971 Web site www.isport.cm.au/volleyball/albwod
VOLT Beechworth has a famous Pole Volter, a World Record Holder, Emma George.
VOLUNTARY Please note that most of the persons working at the Tourist Information Centres are Volunteers. Make sure you thank them for helping you have a better holiday.
VULCANISE This is a method of heating rubber to form a different component or material. The Australian Jewellery Factory used vulcanised rubber to form production moulds.
